The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott LynchThe first in a seven-book series, and an incredible feat. Elaborate confidence games, a secondary-world duchy inspired by 17th C. Venice, and incredibly compelling characters. The plot roars along like an unstoppable freight train, with twists and turns that would derail a lesser writer. I haven't had this much fun with a book in a long time. (Full review here.)
