Best American Fantasy by Ann & Jeff VanderMeer (eds.)First volume of a new year's best series, edited by Ann & Jeff VanderMeer, with series editor Matthew Cheney. An incredible array of fantastical fiction, both from the expected genre outlets, as well as many diverse literary journals. It's difficult to pick out any standout pieces, since the entire anthology is so impressively strong, but exceptional still is Daniel Alarcón's "Abraham Lincoln Has Been Shot," which is wonderfully untethered from narratological temporality, and presents a story of unexpected sweetness in amongst the strangeness.
